Background

Games are increasingly being integrated into education, and for good reason. Participatory activities, like games, are highly effective in delivering educational content. The recreational nature of games makes learning enjoyable, fostering greater attention and deeper absorption of knowledge and skills. Moreover, games enhance cognitive functions by engaging learners in decision-making and social interaction, creating a dynamic and impactful learning experience.

Despite the rapid advancements in the gaming industry, particularly in board games, their application in education often remains outdated. Many educational projects still rely on old concepts, neglecting the innovative mechanics of modern board games. This is compounded by the limited accessibility of digital games for economically disadvantaged groups.

Our project aims to bridge this gap by uniting diverse organizations with expertise in board game design, production, and application for various marginalized groups. Together, they will explore modern uses of board games in education, sharing knowledge to foster collaboration and efficiency in their fields.

The Soup Game

The "Soup Game" is a collaborative and inclusive board game created as part of the I-Game project. It serves as a practical example of how serious games can be used to educate and engage marginalized groups. Developed using insights gained during the project, the game is available in multiple languages and focuses on fostering social interaction, decision-making, and inclusion, making it an accessible learning tool for diverse audiences.

The Soup Game includes the following components:

Rulebook: This guide provides the instructions for playing the game, ensuring players understand the objectives, setup, and rules. It explains how to use the game elements and offers a structured approach to gameplay.

Ingredient Cards: These cards represent various ingredients like tomatoes, eggs, bread, cheese, and herbs. Players use these cards to gather resources needed to complete recipes during the game. Each card adds a layer of strategy as players decide which ingredients to collect or trade.

Recipe Cards: These cards outline specific dishes players must prepare using the ingredients. Each recipe includes a list of required ingredients, encouraging players to strategize and plan their actions to complete the recipes.

Plates: Representing the serving aspect of the game, plates are where completed recipes are placed. They serve as visual markers of progress and success in creating dishes.
