Newsletter #2: TeachBlue Training Workshop in Larnaca: Empowering Educators Through Ocean Literacy
In September 2025, educators from across Europe gathered in Larnaca, Cyprus, for an inspiring five-day professional development workshop organised within the framework of the TeachBlue Erasmus+ project.
Bringing together participants from Poland, Greece, Portugal, and Cyprus, the training workshop focused on one important goal: helping early childhood educators introduce marine and ocean literacy into classrooms through creative, engaging, and developmentally appropriate methods.
The event marked a significant milestone for TeachBlue, an Erasmus+ initiative dedicated to promoting environmental awareness and sustainability from the earliest stages of education. The project aligns with:
- UNESCO’s Ocean Literacy Framework
- UN Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water
- The UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030)
📘 Exploring the TeachBlue Educational Toolkit
During the workshop, participants explored the innovative TeachBlue Educational Toolkit, designed specifically for children aged 4–8 years.
The toolkit transforms ocean literacy concepts into accessible and inspiring learning experiences, encouraging children to build a lifelong connection with the ocean and develop environmentally responsible attitudes from an early age.
Teachers had the opportunity to work with:
- The TeachBlue curriculum and handbook
- Educational activity guides
- The e-learning platform
- The “Blue Mission” educational board game
- Immersive 360° underwater videos
These resources combine creativity, play, storytelling, and technology to make marine education engaging and meaningful for young learners.
🎲 Learning Through Practice and Collaboration
The workshop was designed as a highly interactive experience, encouraging educators to actively participate, reflect, and exchange ideas.
Participants explored:
- Interactive modules based on the Principles of Ocean Literacy
- Hands-on educational activities
- Collaborative discussions and reflection sessions
- Field experiences connecting theory with practice
Beyond the classroom sessions, teachers also participated in practical experiences that helped them better understand how environmental education can be integrated into everyday learning environments.
The training concluded with a certificate award ceremony, celebrating the participants’ dedication and contribution to promoting marine literacy in early childhood education.
🌍 Building a More Sustainable Future Through Education
TeachBlue demonstrates that environmental awareness can begin at a very young age. By equipping educators with innovative tools and methodologies, the project helps create meaningful learning experiences that inspire curiosity, responsibility, and respect for the natural world.
As highlighted throughout the workshop, education is not only about knowledge — it is about shaping the future. And through initiatives like TeachBlue, educators across Europe are helping children understand that protecting the ocean means protecting our shared future. 🌊💙
