From 3–7 September 2025, members of the Dracon Rules Design Studio team joined educators, teachers, and project partners from Greece, Portugal, Poland, and Cyprus in Larnaca, Cyprus, for the TeachBlue training workshop: Professional Development in Ocean Literacy for Early Childhood Educators.

The training was organised within the framework of the Erasmus+ project TeachBlue: An Innovative Marine and Ocean Literacy Toolkit for Early Childhood Teachers, a project dedicated to supporting educators in introducing marine and ocean literacy from the earliest stages of learning.

Exploring the TeachBlue Toolkit

Throughout the workshop, participants had the opportunity to explore and test the innovative TeachBlue Toolkit, a future-oriented set of educational resources designed especially for children aged 4–8.

The toolkit includes:

  • the Teacher’s Handbook and Curriculum;
  • the Educational Activities Guide;
  • the Blue Mission educational board game;
  • immersive 360° underwater videos;
  • digital resources supporting ocean literacy in early childhood education.

These materials aim to transform ocean literacy into playful, accessible, and inspiring learning experiences. They are aligned with UNESCO’s Ocean Literacy Framework and SDG 14: Life Below Water, supporting teachers in helping children understand the importance of protecting marine ecosystems.

Learning Through Practice, Play and Exploration

The five-day training combined interactive modules, creative sessions, practical workshops, and hands-on activities. Educators worked together to test the TeachBlue resources, reflect on their classroom use, and exchange ideas on how to make marine education meaningful for young learners.

For Dracon Rules Design Studio, this workshop was also an important opportunity to present and test Blue Mission, the educational board game developed by our team. Through storytelling, cooperation, and exploration, the game helps children discover key ocean literacy concepts while learning through play.

Field Trips That Brought Ocean Learning to Life

The learning experience was further enriched through field trips to important marine and environmental education locations in Cyprus, including:

  • the Thalassa Museum;
  • the Cape Greko Environmental & Educational Centre;
  • Ammos Kambouri Beach.

These visits helped connect theory with real-life experiences, showing how ocean literacy can move beyond the classroom and become an engaging, memorable learning journey.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Ocean-Minded Citizens

The TeachBlue training workshop in Larnaca was more than a professional development activity. It was a shared learning experience that brought together educators committed to helping children build curiosity, awareness, and respect for the ocean.

At Dracon Rules Design Studio, we are proud to contribute to a project that combines education, creativity, digital innovation, and game-based learning to support teachers and inspire young learners.

A heartfelt thank you to all partners, trainers, and participants for making this training such a meaningful and successful experience.

Together, we continue working to bring the ocean closer to classrooms and to inspire the next generation of ocean-minded citizens.
